Org. Setting and Reporting


The mandate of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (ESCAP) is to promote sustainable and inclusive development and regional connectivity in the Asian and Pacific region. ESCAP’s role as a regional development arm of the United Nations Secretariat is to support its membership with policy oriented research and analysis, normative support and technical assistance and capacity building, to respond to the development priorities and changing needs of the Asian and Pacific region.

This position is located in the of the Conference and Documentation Services Section (CDSS). The Section reports to the Deputy Executive Secretary for Programme Support. The incumbent reports to the Language Service Assistant.


Responsibilities


Under the direct supervision of the Language Service Assistant and the overall supervision of the Chief of the Editorial Unit, the incumbent is required to perform the following functions:

  • Produces camera-ready documents for reproduction by formatting complex documents in desktop publishing layout. Incorporates changes marked by editors, drafters and others, as appropriate, ensuring that the final version of the document conforms to the original language manuscript as to format and typography and to existing editorial guidelines.
  • Performs proofreading functions, ensuring that changes marked in the draft copy have been incorporated and alerting the responsible authority if obvious errors or discrepancies are found in the edited text.
  • Stores final text on the database.
  • Participates, as member of a team, in the production of parliamentary and miscellaneous documentation, supplements and sales publications, supporting the development, testing, maintenance and deployment of technological tools such as the editorial toolbar and the gText suite of software programmes, including the eLUNa editorial interface, UNTERM and gDoc, as necessary.
  • Assists and replaces the Language Service Assistant and acts as supervisor, when needed.
  • Trains and guides temporary and junior staff in the processing of basic and more complex documents. Performs quality control before the issuance of documents produced in-house and contractually. Assists in creating and updating templates and models as needed, under the guidance of the supervisor and the editors.
  • Compiles submitted corrections and suggests appropriate edits in accordance with existing guidelines and established practice.
  • Rotates in late shifts, in particular for the processing of in-session documentation, as needed.
  • Depending on the needs of the service, availability for overtime is expected.
  • Provides text processing and proofreading services to ESCAP and its subsidiary bodies, among others, as needed.
  • Performs other related work as required.

Education


High school diploma or equivalent is required.

A first-level university degree may be accepted in lieu of two years of required experience.




Work Experience


A minimum of five years (or three years if graduated with a bachelor’s degree) of progressively responsible experience in desktop publishing, including draft typing, copy editing, proof-reading and typographical layout, or related area, is required.

Experience in the United Nations Common System or international organizations is desirable.


Languages


English and French are the working languages of the United Nations Secretariat. For the post advertised, fluency in English is required. Knowledge of another UN official language is an advantage.


Assessment


Evaluation of qualified candidates may include an assessment exercise which may be followed by competency-based interview.
